If a craftsman is one ‘who pursues for himself and for his own personal satisfaction the pursuit of the almost perfect work, of good work done with art, intelligence, manual skill and knowledge’ (in the words of the American sociologist Richard Sennett), then it is true that the concept can be applied to businesses of any size, as long as they remain faithful to these important principles. This is what happens at Scarpato’s, the long-established pastry shop that since 1888 has been churning out non-stop ‘dolcerie’ – this is how they refer to their creations – which first in Legnagno, then from Villa Bartolomea, on the outskirts of Verona, have enjoyed a success that goes well beyond regional borders.
